Registration Deadline to Stay in Program – May 21

The registration deadline for all panel participants and paper givers is May 21, 2014. Participants who have not registered by the deadline will be withdrawn from the program. Please contact us (montreal2014@ipsa.org) if you intend to register but are unable to do so by this date.

Registration remains open for attendees until July 24, 2014.

Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales, to Host Plenary

Rt. Hon. Carwyn Jones AM, First Minister of Wales, will present a plenary on Wednesday, July 23 from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. The subject is to be determined.

Governance Expert Rod Rhodes to Present a Plenary Titled “Challenges of Contemporary Governance: Rediscovering the Craft of Public Administration”

On Monday, July 21 at 3 p.m., Rod Rhodes, Professor of Government at the University of Southampton (UK) and Professor of Government at Griffith University (Brisbane, Australia), will present a plenary titled “Challenges of Contemporary Governance: Rediscovering the Craft of Public Administration.”

Can’t Miss Event: The INM Symposium Titled “Developing Expertise in the Design of Participatory Tools: Professionalization and Diversification of the Public Participation Field”

The Institut du Nouveau Monde (INM) is a non-partisan organization whose mission is to promote civic participation in democratic life. Its principal areas of expertise include civic participation, participatory democracy, social acceptability, participatory governance, social entrepreneurship and social innovation.

The INM symposium will be held on July 21 and 22 in conjunction with the IPSA World Congress of Political Science. The symposium is included with World Congress registration, but members of the public who wish to attend only the symposium may do so for a fee of US$40.

IPSA Summer School - Ankara 2014

IPSA-METU Summer School for Social Science Research Methods

In collaboration with the International Political Science Association (IPSA), the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS), Middle East Technical University (METU) will present the second IPSA-METU Summer School for Social Science Research Methods from August 18 to 29, 2014. IPSA continues its efforts to support the development of political science by fostering the creation of academic networks linking East and West, and North and South, and helping to establish summer schools on research methods in social science in various parts of the world, including Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa. The IPSA-METU Summer School is the first of its kind in Turkey, the Middle East, North Africa, and Eurasia. It gives graduate students and young professionals in the social sciences a unique opportunity to train under leading experts on research methods.

The Summer School offers six courses on quantitative and qualitative methods and hosts graduate students, young academics and professionals interested in receiving theoretical and practical training in these methods. Due to the rigorous training and full-time schedules of these courses, Summer School participants must select and register for one of six courses given weekdays over a period of two weeks. This allows students to attend both lectures and practical sessions. The schedule also includes one-on-one sessions in the form of office hours, thus giving students a chance to review their individual projects with the instructors. Detailed course outlines as well as short biographies of the instructors can be found on the website. In addition, seminar-style talks involving students and instructors are scheduled in order to encourage student participation and make the learning experience more stimulating. Career development sessions will also be offered, including sessions on drafting and publishing research proposals.

Teresa Sasinska-Klas Lecture at the First IAPSS World Congress: Ukraine, Russia and the EU: New Communication Order or Disorder?

The International Association for Political Science Students (IAPSS) welcomed Prof. Teresa Sasinska-Klas, IPSA Vice-President for Europe and Africa, to the inaugural IAPSS World Congress in Thessaloniki, Greece. The event was held from March 31 to April 6, 2014.

In a lecture titled “Ukraine, Russia and the EU: New Communication Order or Disorder?” Professor Sasinska-Klas addressed one of the most timely and important topics in international politics. Her lecture, presented on April 1, drew a considerable audience and sparked a lively debate.

Prof. Sasinska-Klas framed the current political problems in Ukraine within a broader historical and regional context dating back to the 18th century, identifying the principal vectors of historical conflict and concluding with a detailed analysis of the current political situation, including the causes and outcomes of the Maidan Movement, the referendum and subsequent annexation of Crimea, and the ensuing diplomatic conflict between the United States, the EU and Russia.

Drawing on her extensive knowledge of Western European, Russian and Ukrainian politics, Prof. Sasinska-Klas identified the main causes of the Ukraine conflict from both a domestic and an international perspective. Participants gained insights in the manifold perceptions of the conflict, including those that are sometimes overlooked by political pundits and correspondents. She also presented a clear overview of the many obstacles that must be overcome in order to understand the current challenges.

The Q&A session that followed gave rise to a lively and sometimes heated discussion involving participants from many regions of the world, among them students from Russia and Ukraine. Prof. Sasinska-Klas took great care to answer the questions with evermore detailed information, and the discussion went on long after her lecture was over.

The first IAPSS World Congress proved to be a great success, attracting over 250 participants from all continents. IPSA congratulates IAPSS on the success of the event, and it looks forward to a continued collaboration.

1) For the past decade, Uncommon Knowledge, an interview series produced by the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and hosted by Peter Robinson, has helped to enrich the debate on the most critical social and political issues of our time. In the most recent conversation, Peter Robinson talked to Robert Thomson, former chief editor at Dow Jones & Company and managing editor of the Wall Street Journal and currently chief executive officer of News Corp, about the role of the newspapers in the near future. 2) The Emancipation Proclamation: Bringing History Together is the title of the last video updated on the webcasts section of the Library of Congress website. The LOC webcasts is a rich archive of videos and audio files archived by likely user: teacher, librarians and archivists, kids and families, publishers, researchers and visitors. 3) The results of the recent elections in Europe are sure to have a considerable bearing on the upcoming European elections. Administrative elections in France resulted in a victory for the Front National headed by Marine Le Pen, while in Hungary the Jobbik party obtained 20 per cent of the seats in the national parliament. The rise of the far right constitutes one of the main risks and leasing issues heading into the incoming elections. (Thematic Networks on the IPSAPortal)

4) A new special issue of World Development on Decentralization and Governance was recently published on the website of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). This collection is the product of a workshop held at Columbia University in June 2009, in the context of the Initiative for Policy Dialogue’s Decentralization Task Force. The National University of Singapore’s Department of Political Science is proud to present its 3rd Annual IPSA-NUS Summer School for Social Science Research Methods, which runs from June 30 to July 11, 2014. The Methods School is organized in cooperation with the International Political Science Association. IPSA’s mission is to promote empirical research in political science and related disciplines around the world, and the IPSA-NUS Methods School forms the Asia-Pacific hub in a global network of methods programs, with other summer schools hosted at the University of São Paulo, the University of Stellenbosch and the Middle East Technical University.

The IPSA-NUS Methods School offers rigorous training with outstanding and highly experienced international faculty in a wide range of social science research methods. Students, post-doctoral fellows, junior faculty, civil servants, professionals and anyone with an interest in research methods can choose between 12 different quantitative, qualitative and formal methods courses as well as benefit from intensive, hands-on coursework over a two-week period.

In addition to regular class meetings, lab sessions and exercises, the Methods School organizes the IPSA-NUS International Speakers Series and offers various information sessions on such topics as academic writing and publishing. It fosters a unique and supportive social environment meant to facilitate networking and encourage the exchange of ideas on the theory and practice of social science research.

For 2014, a number of new, basic and advanced courses have been added to the existing Methods School curriculum. Overall, the Methods School offers 12 courses in quantitative, qualitative and formal methods. All courses are given by outstanding and highly experienced international faculty, with a focus on the theory and practice of social science research and high-quality training in diverse, state-of-the-art methods and techniques.

IPSA RC 18 International Conference on “South Asia in Global Perspective: Democracy, Human Rights and Nation Building”

IPSA RC 18 (Asian and Pacific Studies) held one of its most successful conferences in Jodhpur (India) on February 21 and 22, 2014, under the theme “South Asia in Global Perspective: Democracy, Human Rights and Nation Building.”

This international conference, jointly organized by RC-18 and Jai Narain Vyas University under the leadership of conference director, Dr. Meena Bardia, drew 500 political scientists from 131 Indian universities and 10 countries around the world. The event featured eight panels, and 264 papers were presented. The President of India sent a greeting message and the opening and closing sessions saw the Honorable Supreme Court of India judge deliver speeches. Teh-Kuang Chang (chair of RC 18) delivered the keynote speech, during which he announced plans to raise the funds needed to set up the Asian and Pacific Foundation to create an award for outstanding achievement in Asian and Pacific studies, provide travel grants for young scholars, publish books and journals, and mark the 40th anniversary of RC 18 in 2016. RC 18 will soon be soliciting contributions from the public and will host recitals by Grammy-winning pianist, Dr. Angelin Chang, as part of its efforts to raise funds.
