International Encyclopedia of Political Science. Coming in September!

Eight Volume Set
Published in association with IPSA

Edited by
Bertrand Badie Paris Institute of Political Studies, France
Dirk Berg-Schlosser Philipps-University Marburg, Germany
Leonardo Morlino LUISS Guido Carli, Rome, Italy

With entries from leading international scholars from around the world, the International Encyclopedia of Political Science provides a definitive, comprehensive picture of all aspects of political life, recognizing its theoretical foundations and including empirical findings from across the globe. The eight volumes examine all the main subdisciplines of political science and include coverage of comparative politics, epistemology, political economy, political sociology, and international relations. The encyclopedia also provides approximately 80 entries on the use of both qualitative and quantitative research methods in political science.

The process of democratization will remain a vital topic during the 21st century, and the encyclopedia contains extensive coverage of the evolution of democracy as well as other political systems. Readers will find theoretical and empirical background on other important issues such as global security, the relationship between religion and the state, and political issues related to gender and race/ethnicity.

Winners of the First Meisel-Laponce Award Announced

In consultation with IPSR’s newly revamped Editorial Board, the editors have selected the recipient of the first Meisel-Laponce Award. The award recognizes the best article published in IPSR since IPSA’s 2009 World Congress.

The winners are Jørgen Møller and Svend-Erik Skaaning for their article, “Beyond the Radial Delusion: Conceptualizing and Measuring Democracy and Non-democracy” 31:3 (2010). We congratulate Professors Møller and Skaaning for considerably advancing our understanding of democratic theory and practice.

The winning article is available on the IPSR home page (http://ips.sagepub.com), as are the five other articles nominated by the editors. The award will be presented at IPSA’s next World Congress in Madrid in July 2012.

Jørgen Møller holds a PhD from the European University Institute in Florence, Italy (2007), and he is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Political Science, Aarhus University, Denmark. His research interests include conceptualization of democracy, post-communist political change, comparative historical analysis of democratization and state formation, and qualitative methodology.

Svend-Erik Skaaning holds a PhD from the Department of Political Science at Aarhus University (2007), where he is currently associate professor. His research interests include the conceptualization and measurement of democracy, civil liberties and the rule of law, political regime change, state capacity, and comparative methodology.

Wyn Grant's Valedictory Lecture (University of Warwick - May 2011)

Wyn Grant's valedictory lecture in May 2011 set the stage for his retirement from the University of Warwick in September 2011 after forty years as a teacher and researcher.

IPSA would like to congratulate Dr. Grant on his long and illustrious career – one which is by no means over, as Wyn Grant remains very active in the field. Among his ongoing activities, Dr. Grant will serve as Program Chair of the next World Congress of Political Science, which will be held in Madrid in July 2012.

Launch of IO BIO Project: The Biographical Dictionary of Secretaries-General of International Organizations

IO BIO is seeking participants.

The IO BIO Project is designed to create a biographical dictionary featuring short bios of Secretaries-General (SGs) or other senior executives with International Organizations (IOs). Given the limited biographical literature on SGs, what we have is an incomplete picture of the various individuals who’ve held similar positions or of the relationships between them. The IO BIO Project will provide short biographies of individual SGs and will be designed to let users link across individual entries to create broader prosopographies of SG groups (descriptions and analyses of social and professional connections among these individuals). Ranging from one and eight book pages in length (depending of the level of importance, with three planned category levels), these biographies will present an accurate and coherent description of the lives of the individuals cited. To date, the project has been restricted to deceased SGs of intergovernmental organizations, focusing on SGs who have made their mark, for reasons good, bad or even unusual.

Further details are available at http://www.ru.nl/fm/reinalda (select IO BIO link), including information on the initial SG database covering 130 organizations, a list of entries, a model biography, writing instructions, and an invitation to join the IO BIO Project paper explaining the planned organizational setup.
In the project’s initial phase, we are looking for experts interested in drafting an entry in the biographical dictionary, as well as editors and people willing to support the IO BIO Project by contributing comments and ideas.

For further information, please contact us at iobio@fm.ru.nl.
