Seminario Hegoa 'Peace Studies in the times of the Ukranian war'

DATE: 1 December 2022
PLACE: Zubiria Etxea (Hegoa)
Lehendakari Aguirre 81, Bilbao
TIME: 12.00 - 14.00

Peace Studies have recently been enriched with new critical perspectives that emphasize
the role played in peace building by aspects such as grassroots community initiatives,
gender relations, space, environment, culture and identities. These are dimensions
that go beyond the analysis centered on the State and Its security, allowing for a more
complete, complex and transformative reading of reality. However, the outbreak of the
war in Ukraine imposes a "realist" political and media agenda, in which geopolitics,
state power and military confrontation take center stage. How is the war impacting on
imaginaries about the reality and attitudes of the population? Does Peace Studies risk
being marginalized by a wave of thinking focused on military security?

The seminar is part of the project InPeace - People, Communities and Cities in
Peacebuilding: An Inclusive and Intersectional Approach to Peace Studies, funded by EU
Erasmus+ and Nordplus Higher Education. Participants are: Höfði Reykjavík Peace
Centre, University of Iceland; Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI) at Tampere
University, Finland; Centre for Peace Studies, UiT The Arctic University of Norway,
Trömso, Norway; Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS) of the University of Sarajevo,
Bosnia-Herzegovina; and Hegoa, Institute for Development Studies and International
Cooperation, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
