Spain and Portugal have been the most delayed cases in Western Europe regarding the rise of the radical right. However, since Vox gained representation in the Andalusian regional parliament in 2018—an event that propelled the party onto the national stage the following year—and since André Ventura, leader of Chega!, won his parliamentary seat in the 2019 Portuguese legislative elections, the radical right has become a phenomenon that has arrived to stay, at least for now, in both countries. Although the emergence of the radical right in the Iberian context has been widely studied in both cases, including from a comparative perspective (Heyne & Manucci, 2021; López‑Rodríguez et al., 2021; Mendes & Dennison, 2020), less attention has been paid to its evolution over time in each setting.

For this reason, the aim of this paper is to analyse the components of the radical‑right vote across the different electoral contests held in recent years in order to observe its evolution, as well as to determine whether there has been any change in the emotional regime of its voters.
