Electoral competition takes place along a political space shaped by several conflicts that have been activated by political actors and that drive the electoral alliances formed. Their change should translate into political realignments and a reshape the political and its alliances. Reports on the issues of the political debate between parties show that there has been a change on the issues discussed in Spain from 2011 to 2015, so the electoral alliance observed in these years might be the result of these changes. However, such hypothesis has not been properly tested at the voter level. This paper tests the extent to which the electoral volatility observed in 2015 and 2016 in Spain was due to the emergence of new issues or to a change in the parties owning the old ones. It does so using panel data from POLAT project that allows differentiating changes in the attitudes towards parties from changes in the behaviours.
