In recent years, scholars have shown growing interest in the role of place as a divisive factor shaping both political attitudes and behaviour. Several authors argue that place has emerged as an independent cleavage in contemporary Western democracies (Taylor et al., 2023; Gimpel et al., 2020). Geographic patterns of support for populist and radical-right parties, as well as for specific social movements, recur across national contexts. This has inspired concepts such as the geography of discontent (Cremaschi et al., 2024), left-behind places (Furlong, 2019), or places that don’t matter (Rodríguez-Pose, 2018), all referring to areas that exhibit heightened levels of political discontent. Research has predominantly approached this division through the rural–urban lens, sometimes in combination with centre–periphery dynamics or with territorial inequalities in deprivation. Yet recent advances underscore the need to continue refining the mechanisms and nuances that shape the political relevance of place. We welcome contributions that examine geographic political divides from diverse angles and approaches. In particular, we encourage submissions that: (1) analyse spatial divides in both political attitudes and behaviour; (2) investigate their social-psychological underpinnings through place-based identities and attachments; (3) assess the role of territorial inequalities, deprivation, and mobility patterns; (4) explore the politicisation and representation of these geographic divides; and (5) advance methodological tools for measuring them.
